About Kim Engineering, Inc
Kim Engineering, Inc. (KEI), founded in 1993 by Sunny Kim, is a multi-disciplinary engineering firm who provides clients with the full range of services, including, but not limited to, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, surveying, construction materials testing and inspections, contract administration, and landscape architecture services.
Our comprehensive scope of services and overall engineering expertise enables us to work with our clients on a total-project basis. KEI stays with our clients from start to finish, delivering personalized services and added value. At KEI, our clients come first with a passion of taking on technical challenges for both public and private sector projects. It is our belief that engineering is the future and we take pride in delivering the best product catered to our client’s needs utilizing our staff’s expertise and talent.
Our main office is located in Beltsville, Maryland with a branch office located in Baltimore, Maryland. KEI is comprised of approximately 70 employees and has a total of five drill rigs.
Kim Engineering, Inc. is certified as a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE). We have our own drilling equipment and certified laboratory for materials testing.
Leadership
SUNNY KIM, P.E.
PRESIDENT
Sunny Kim has provided oversight for engineering and geotechnical services for over 30 years throughout the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area for more than a thousand projects including geotechnical studies and report preparation for numerous types of projects such as foundation design for high-rise buildings, storm water management facilities, site investigations and construction inspections. He has a Master of Engineering degree in geotechnical engineering from Virginia Tech and is a registered P.E. in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Professional memberships include American Society of Civil Engineers, American Council of Engineering Companies, Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Maryland Building Industry Association.
KEITH BROWN
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
Keith leads Kim Engineering’s pursuits, developing strategy for business development for all in-house service lines. He is responsible for identifying new business opportunities and implementing strategies to pursue them, while managing the company’s marketing team and activities.
Keith has over 20 years of experience in the Construction/Engineering industry and has worked in various roles including Intern Construction Laborer, Estimator, Project Manager, and Director of Construction Services on public and private sector projects throughout the Metro-Washington and Baltimore regions. In addition, Mr. Brown’s responsibilities include contract negotiations and client relations.
RICHARD KIMES
V.P. OF DRILLING SERVICES
Mr. Kimes has over 35 years drilling and managing in the geotechnical and environmental drilling industry. His experience ranges from drilling in support of local Phase 2 ESA’s for environmental consultants, drilling for investigations, product recovery and monitoring systems for major oil companies, drilling in support of investigations at DOD facilities located all along the mid-Atlantic and substantial experience drilling at private landfills and Superfund Landfills all over the eastern United States. In addition to environmental drilling experience, Rich has performed geotechnical drilling projects continuously for small and large geotechnical engineering firms over the length of his career.
Tom Labuda, P.E.
V.P. OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
Mr. Labuda has 30 years of experience encompassing a range of engineering geoscience disciplines, including geotechnical engineering, geophysics, engineering geology, hydrogeology, and environmental engineering. He has significant geotechnical engineering expertise and has directed numerous geotechnical investigations for buildings, roads, and bridges. His geotechnical engineering experience includes evaluation and design of shallow and deep foundation systems, pavement design, mechanical and chemical soil improvements and modification, support of excavation (SOE), shoreline protection, and scour analysis. Mr. Labuda has conducted numerous geophysical site characterization for MSHA and VDOT projects. He has performed investigations and engineered remedial measures targeting a range of geohazards, including rock and soil slope stability analysis and forensic investigations of slope failures; cavities and incipient sinkholes in karst terrain; and pavement subsidence associated with utility failures and abandoned mines. In addition, he is an experienced hydrogeologist, performs well siting studies, design and analysis of pump test data and has completed qualitative and quantitative ground water supply analysis for numerous commercial and government clients. He has expertise in environmental remediation system design and cost analysis, and has provided engineering services related to soil vapor and liquid extraction systems; remedial excavation and contaminated media management.
BRANDON FRITZ, P.E.
V.P. OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
Mr. Fritz is a licensed professional engineer with over 20 years of experience in all aspects of project development, including planning, design, permitting, and construction of land development infrastructure projects. He has designed and managed a broad range of projects that include feasibility studies, conceptual and entitlement plans, and final engineering plans for roadway design, utility design, sediment control, and stormwater management. For over a decade, he has provided leadership, management, and oversight in land development as a Project Manager in various Maryland market sectors: federal, municipal, institutional, commercial, residential, and mixed use. His breadth of experience provides him a comprehensive perspective in handling the unique challenges that often arise in development projects.
ALAN AMADOR
V.P. OF CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
Mr. Amador has extensive experience performing quality control testing and inspections: laboratory and field testing for soils (structural and non-structural fill), foundation, traditionally reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, precast concrete, reinforced masonry, hot mixed asphalt, structural steel, cold formed steel framing, timber framing, floor slab profiling flatness/ levelness, floor slab vapor emission and alkalinity, sprayed fire resistive material and intumescent fireproofing.
Mr. Amador’s responsibilities have included daily review of technician field and laboratory reports, management of technician field work and daily scheduling. He has planned and set up projects, including reviewing drawings, project manuals and geotechnical reports, oversees and assists in laboratory work for concrete and soils, and attended meetings to coordinate quality control and remediation work with clients and contractors. In addition to QC scope, his experience with construction management of projects includes from project conception to final delivery including responding to RFI’s, RFP’s and developing cost estimates for materials testing and material take off/ bill of quantities.
FARA JAWARA, C.E.T.
DIRECTOR OF CONSTRUCTION SERVICES
Mr. Fara Jawara has worked in the Construction Industry for over 20 years. In 1997, Fara was Construction Engineer with Engineering Consulting Services in Hanover MD. In 2001, he served as Project Manager for CTI Consultants, Inc in Rockville MD and in 2003, as Asst. Project Manager with WCS Construction LLC in Washington, DC and in 2009, as Project Manager for the First Step EOZ Inc in Alexandria, VA. Fara has worked on and was instrumental in the successful completion of the New American Red Cross HQ in Washington DC, the IKEA Flagship Superstore at College Park, Maryland and most recently the National Historic Registered Building Renovation and Retrofit of the Tremont Grand in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied Geotechnical Engineering at the University Of New York at Stony Brook and is certified by the Washington D.C, Area Council of Engineering Laboratories and the American Society of Certified Engineering Technologists. He also has a Construction Project Management Professional Certification and certified by OSHA in Occupational Safety and Health in Construction.
ADEL RASHID
SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
Mr. Adel Rashid has over 11 years of experience in inspections of design steel and concrete buildings. Mr. Rashid’s inspection experience includes checking concrete reinforcement distribution, overlap, dimensions per ACI code, checking columns, and beam sections with AISC tables for member alignment and buckling, inspection of welds, hairline cracks in paint, checking of bolts for size, type, tightness per specifications and plans. Inspections also include portal frames, gabled frames, trusses, and caravans.
JOSHUA KIM
ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT
Joshua Kim is a registered engineer-in-training in the state of Maryland with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. With 5 years of experience in Land Development, Joshua has helped plan and design conceptual and final engineering plans for stormwater management, sediment control, roadway design, and utility design to meet requirements for projects at both the state and local jurisdiction level. His responsibilities also include assisting clients in applying for and procuring various permits from state and local agencies throughout Maryland.
JAY JUNG
V.P. OF ACCOUNTING
Mr. Jung joined our firm in July 2018 and holds the position of senior accounting manager. He holds a BS in Business administration with a concentration in accounting. He has years of experience in tax preparation, accounting services, payroll services, budgeting, and small business administration. Experience in group life and health benefits account management. As an account manager, he provides daily hands-on service to clients large and small, offering timely, creative solutions to meet their needs.
In addition to his duties in account management, Mr. Jung is the human resources manager for Kim engineering as well as the coordinator for all carrier and state licensing requirements.
OUR ACCREDITATIONS
We maintain an AASHTO R18 accredited geotechnical and construction materials testing laboratory in Beltsville, MD, and our field technicians are ACI and MARTCP certified.
